Christian Summer Club Camp Director - Part-time

Position Background- 

The Presbyterian Church of Plum Creek (PCPC) has a summer part-time opening for a director of a faith-based day camp for children five through twelve years old, conducted on church property.  The camp runs Wednesdays from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm, June 17 – August 5.   The position has Wednesday hours of 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM along with prep time throughout each week and prior to camp start, beginning June 1.   Other camp staff include volunteers and youth approved by the Church; the Commissioned Pastor/Christian Formation Director to provide limited assistance.

The Camp Director will create a nurturing and engaging environment that aids in developing interpersonal relationships, open communication, friendship, and empathy with about 30-40 campers Grades K – 6th.  The Camp Director will incorporate and/or lead a faith message to the campers during each session. Other expectations of the Camp Director include:  

  • Manage each Summer Camp session

  • React to the changing needs of the students and the environment   

  • Convey new ideas and add appropriate activities to the current camp framework

  • Work within budget

  • Coordinate activities with Commissioned Pastor/Christian Formation Director 

Specific Duties of the Job include the following- 

Planning duties prior to camp include: 

  • Advertise the camp through email blasts and church communication. Church Office staff will publicize the camp prior to Camp Director’ employment

  • Keep updated student information, create and collect permission slips

  • Assist the Christian Formation Team with recruiting volunteers and youth workers, schedule volunteers for about 6 to 8 per week. 

  • Review, select and schedule faith-based curriculum and activities for camp

  • Discuss camp with parents of prospective campers

  • Ensure that the church has copies of security clearances for volunteers/workers

  • Identify and plan for special needs requirements for church campers (i.e.: food allergies, ability and sensory limitations)

  • Create discipline protocol

  • Coordinate off-site activities - obtain permission slips and arrange transportation 

 

Daily Summer Camp activities include:  

  • Plan daily activities for each Wednesday, considering fluctuations in age attendance and size and weather conditions

  • Supervise registration - including coordinating special needs of campers and their responsible adults, collecting fees and permission slips 

  • Lead planned camp activities and/or coordinate and supervise volunteer leaders. Direct daily volunteers 

  • Secure supplies, recreational toys/games, craft supplies, and snacks 

  • Create options for play and periods of free time

  • Direct camp clean-up and equipment storage for the following session 

  • Manage disciplinary protocols 

Close the camp at end of season; specific duties include: 

  • Provide a final report to the Christian Formation Committee, including a budget summary and recommendations for future planning

  • Supervise cleaning and storage of equipment and supplies 

  • With church staff (who?), create a presentation/summary for a church service 

Requirements for the ideal applicant should include the following: 

  • PA Criminal Records Check

  • PA Child Abuse History

  • FBI fingerprints or waiver for ten-year residency

  • Experience with children and youth preferred

  • Personal faith life

  • Ability to communicate Christian based messages and prayer 

Compensation – 20 hours/week at $18 per hour
